As the UK government considers making Winter Fuel Payments for over-65s mean-tested, many people may need to look for alternative ways to stay warm this winter while managing their energy costs.
At AHM Installations, we support the elderly and less abled with comfortable, energy-efficient bathroom solutions—but we also understand the importance of keeping the entire home warm. Here are some practical tips to stay cosy this winter without breaking the bank.
Use Heating Wisely
If you don’t need to heat your entire home, consider using heating in the rooms you use the most. Your rooms must be a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius to be at a safe temperature. Installing thermostatic radiator valves can help control the temperature in different rooms, thereby reducing energy waste.
Layer Up Indoors
Wearing layers of warm clothing can keep you comfortable at home without needing to turn up the thermostat. Opt for thermal base layers and woollen jumpers for maximum warmth.
Bedding
Make sure to use extra blankets at night, preferably made of fleece material. Alternatively, you could try an electric or weighted blanket. Whilst a weighted blanket is not heated it can still make you feel warm as it will keep out draughts.
Food & Drink
Eating a balanced diet will help keep you healthy having lots of hot drinks throughout the day will help to make you feel warm.
Stay Active
Try not to sit for long periods and make a conscious effort to move around as much as possible to increase the blood circulation around your body which will keep you warm.
Keep Your Curtains Closed In The Evening
Once the sun goes down, closing your curtains helps trap heat inside. Opt for thermal or heavy curtains to add an extra layer of insulation. During the day, make sure to open them and let natural sunlight help warm your rooms.
Maximise Your Home's Insulation
Proper insulation is key to retaining heat. Ensure your walls, loft, and floors are well insulated, which can help reduce heat loss and lower your energy bills. Draught-proofing doors, windows, and even letterboxes can make a big difference. You may be eligible for a grant to help with this, click here to find out more.
Add Rugs To Hard Floors
Bare floors can let cold air circulate, so adding a few rugs can help keep the warmth in and reduce the need to turn up the heating. Plus, they add comfort and reduce the risk of slipping.
Install Energy-Efficient Heating Solutions
Modern, energy-efficient boilers and heating systems can save you significant amounts of money on your heating bills. Consider upgrading to a more efficient system if your current one is outdated. Smart thermostats can also help you control your heating more effectively.
Keep A Warm Bathroom
A well-insulated bathroom with an efficient shower or bath can make a huge difference in your winter comfort. Installing underfloor heating or a heated towel rail can create a warm environment while minimising energy costs.
Whilst we may not be able to overturn the decision to make the Winter Fuel Payment means tested, by following some of the tips above you can stay warm this winter.
