Disabled Bathroom Grants

Council Funded Support

What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?

Local councils provide grant funding for people with registered disabilities. In England, grants are available up to the value of £30,000. Some councils may even give more in some circumstances. The conditions that they can financially support include both physical and mental disabilities. There’s also support for those with cognitive impairments, like dementia, and terminal illnesses. The Disabled Facilities Grant will not have any effect on other benefits that you receive.

These grants allow people to make improvements to their home which can aid their mobility. The improvements can include the following:

Am I Eligible?

If you are registered disabled or are eligible to register as disabled, are on a low income and have savings of less than £6000, then you may be eligible. Your income may dictate how much you are expected to put towards the cost of the work. You must intend to live in the property for the duration of the grant period, which is usually 5 years. In cases where the applicant is terminally ill, this can be made shorter.
If the grant is required for someone who is under the age of 18, then household income may not come into account. Similarly, if a landlord is applying for the grant, their income won’t affect the application. Our experienced team members can provide you with further details on request.
If you’ve already had a Disabled Facilities Grant in the past but your condition has changed or worsened, you may be eligible to apply for another grant.

Who Can Apply For Grants?

Housing association tenants, private tenants and private homeowners can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant. This is done via the local authority if the applicant, or someone they live with, is disabled. Landlords can also apply if they have a tenant who is disabled.
It’s important that you apply for the grant before any work begins. If you make an application after work commences, you may not be approved.

What Happens Next?

Your local council may arrange for an Occupational Therapist to visit you at home before making a decision.
The council will arrange to make payments to you either in full or in instalments, depending on your circumstances. They could give the money to you or pay the contractor directly. Make sure you understand exactly what your arrangement is once your grant is approved.
If your application is successful, contact us and we’ll arrange to visit you at home to discuss the options for your bathroom renovation. We frequently work with customers who have made successful grant applications, so you can trust that we’ll come up with the perfect solution for you.

How Long Does It Take To Approve a Grant?

It depends on which local authority you apply through, and how long their processing times are. On average, it can take 12-14 weeks. The council are obliged to make a decision on your application within 6 months at most.
